EVALUATING THE BREEDER
Now that you have decided to purchase a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, do not buy on impulse. All Cavalier puppies are adorable, with the big brown eyes, and soft expression.
Visit several breeders. The condition of the home and dogs should be the first thing you notice. Are the facilities clean? Do the dogs appear clean and healthy? IF NOT – LEAVE.
Select a breeder who raises puppies in their home. If pups are in a barn, or shed, LEAVE.
A reputable breeder will:- « Be a member of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and/or a breed club. « Not sell a pup under 8 weeks of age « Have a copy of the Breed Standard, and should know, and tell you, the problems to look for. « Know the pedigree of the puppy – grandparents and great- grandparents. « Want to know all about you, your family, your lifestyle, and where the dog will be living Do you have a fenced backyard? Will you walk the pup? « Will have identified pups with either a tattoo or microchip « Will ask you to sign a contract § Get everything in writing. A sales contract should indicate:- The dog is purebred and eligible for registration with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). It is the responsibility of the Seller to register, or transfer, the ownership of the dog. It is not the responsibility of the Buyer. § Stipulate the return policy. Get a guarantee against genetic fault health problems. A good breeder will not hesitate to deal with the problem after the fact. § Look for a Non-Breeding agreement and/or a spay/neuter condition – both are good signs. A Non- Breeding agreement must be signed before you leave with your puppy and may be lifted if your pup grows up to be acceptable for breeding. « Will have copies of test results § Deal only with breeders who test their dogs and ask for copies of test results. § Ask the breeder if the parents of the pup are tested and clear of problems. NO TEST RESULTS – NO SALE « Will guarantee your pup § Be certain to get a record of inoculations when you pick up your pup § Arrange to take your pup to a veterinarian, of your choice, within 72 hours of purchase. § Will be willing to answer your questions and assist you
A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER WILL BE THERE FOR THE LIFETIME OF YOUR PUP. |
